The Top 10 Reason Why OEM/EMS Relationships Fail - Part 1
December 16, 2008
The EMS industry has undergone numerous evolutions and transformations in its more than three decade history. From its roots as an outsourced labor and shared capital equipment model, the industry has undergone various changes. But the real and predictable maturation of the industry truly began with the explosive growth and rampant consolidation of the industry that
occurred in the mid 1990s.
With the recent financial crisis and the worst manufacturing contraction the world has seen in 26 years fully upon us, the rate of consolidation in the EMS industry will accelerate into a final stage, with the resultant trifurcation providing OEMs with a set of choices that look and behave very differently.

The Outsource Group: Interview with Michael Marks
October 23, 2008
1.) In
your personal experience running a massive global enterprise
with a highly responsive supply chain, what would you say
the top two
or three issues to consider are when building a global
supply chain?
Marks: Well the first is obviously what is happening from a cost
perspective, but this changes regularly so clearly you have to
have flexibility in the supply chain. So for example, China,
which has been the simple answer for hardware manufacturing for
at least the last ten years is no longer necessarily the right
answer in every case.

Michael Marks Interview With EMS Now
October
20, 2008
Q: EMS Now - With the tremendous inflation in wages, facilities and even the
RMB in China, what impact will this have on the general flow
of manufacturing outsourcing over the next 5 years or so? What
are your thoughts on Vietnam vs. China 5 years out??
A: Marks
– I’m not sure that it’s really going to have that much of an
impact on China. Sure you are starting
to see some product moving back on-shore, or more likely to Mexico
or Malaysia, but really it’s not that much. China still has 300
million people that are underemployed – compare that to Vietnam
with a total population of around 90M and much less developed
infrastructure and supply chains.
